In the Valley of the Death Goddesses
My days have been strangely aligned. What is happening is done in a suspension of time, it seems.
Alas, the concept of Deja Vu takes on a whole new meaning when one is chosen for patrol duty and such duties bring one to the same place over and over.
It all started with the Head of the Guard in Dratan requesting people to go out and deal with an advance guard of the Death Goddesses moving in from the West. They had chosen a spot somewhat between Dratan and the magic totems that marked Baal's Territory. It is no surprise they didn't want to intrude on him!
I was asked to assist and in so doing, came face to face with a large number of Death Goddesses. Eventually, our Bounty was accomplished and we returned to the Guard to receive our reward. Still, it seemed that there were so many more out there that just a small bounty from a couple of us was not going to help much with the problem.
Having a "sense" for the natural order of things, I took the time to suggest that maybe there is something happening that caused the Death Goddesses to migrate from where ever they called home to invade this far flung corner of Eris. No one really wanted to listen though. It seemed more wanted to kill and had a blood fever. Perhaps the Desert does that to people? I don't know, I tend to enjoy seeing the natural animals out in the desert like the foxes and spending time with the archeologist learning of the past. But I still couldn't get over that sense that something must have happened far to the West to drive the Death Goddesses eastward into our territory.
So now here I am, day after day, doing my patrols down around the Death Goddesses. They still refuse to speak with me and if I get too close, attack without warning. And so I end up defending myself. It's the kind of overwhelming force that having both a Nightmare and a Dragon at my disposal causes them to fail in their attacks. But still I try, day after day, hoping to pick up a word of their language or maybe find a clue to why ... Why do they keep coming? Why do they insist on attacking without parlay? Why are they there?
Someday I will grow weary of the death and destruction. But until then, I will keep trying. To learn the truth is an honorable goal, right?
